Agarose is a natural, linear polysaccharide extracted from the cell wall of certain red algae (Rhodophyta), consisting of repeated units of agarobiose. When in a solution, these units form double helices while cooling, creating a three-dimensional gel network.
Due to its non-toxicity, ease of use and separation properties, agarose is used routinely used to separate nucleic acids during gel electrophoresis. Additionally, this product can be utilized as a gelling agent in other applications, such as Southern and northern blotting and immunodiffusion.
